Relines and Repairs

Relining consists of adding new material to the tissue side of the denture. This process aids in refitting loose dentures caused by healing or resorption. However relining does not change any wear on the denture teeth.

Relines are helpful when tissue changes occur due to resorption (shrinkage) which can be due to:

  • loss of weight
  • loss of teeth
  • loss of bone/tissue
  • disease or illness
  • trauma or injury

Repairs

Repairs may be required when breakage or damage occurs, if teeth need to be added to an existing denture or just from wear and tear. Often denture teeth and clasps can be added to an existing partial denture when additional natural teeth are removed. Never attempt to repair or alter your dentures yourself as it will not last long and may cause the denture to fit improperly. It may be impossible to repair the denture properly if it is altered.

Most repairs can be done in one day. If your denture requires a repair, it may indicate underlying problems associated with the age of the denture, worn teeth or poor fit.
